"A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has
had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the
best until now!”
This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his
glory. And his disciples believed in him.
-- John 2:10-11 NLT
Changing Water Into Wine Summary
Our story begins on the third day of the week, when most Jewish weddings were held because of God's double blessing in the Genesis account of creation. Jesus and his disciples have been invited to a marriage in the city of Cana in Galilee. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was there as well and it is possible that the couple may have been related to her. During the celebration, Mary tells Jesus that they have run out of wine, a very embarrassing situation for the bride and groom. It might have been poor planning, poverty, or more guests than anticipated, but Mary saw a need and went to Jesus. At first Jesus seems to indicate that it wasn't his time. In reality, Mary had brought the problem, but Jesus was looking for her faith in him so he could provide the solution. Mary understood and boldly told the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." (John 2:5)
Throughout his ministry, when Jesus found faith, miracles happened. After Mary's bold statement, he went to work. He ordered the servants to fill 6 large pots with water. Then, dip out some and take it to the chief steward. They faithfully obeyed and the steward found the water, now turned to wine, to be of exceptional quality. The chief steward declared that unlike others, this couple had saved the best wine until last. Not everyone knew what was happening, but his disciples saw this first miracle and believed in Jesus.
There were probably well over 120 gallons of water turned into wine. God is not stingy. Jesus came to provide us abundantly. (John 10:10) If the couple was poor, they would now have an abundance of the very best wine that they could serve, or sell to meet all their needs.
As with all of the miracles and parables of Jesus, this story is rich with revelation and symbolism. The Jews had seen many great miracles under the Old Covenant. With Jesus, you now have a better covenant that launched an age of even greater manifestations of God's love and power! God has saved His best until last.
